A native of San Antonio, Archer had served as a volunteer coach from , working under the past three Comet head coaches. During that stretch, he served as the Comets' first base coach in when the program claimed its only ASC champion. Additionally, Archer has been associated with the program for more than a decade as the owner and general manager of Extra Innings in Plano, the Comets indoor training facility.

Since opening his Extra Innings facility in , he has worked alongside of last six Comet head coaches. Kelly is well connected with the local softball community, is a strong hitting coach, and embraces the high academic culture here at UTD.

Our goal is to compete for championships in every sport and Kelly will bring the winning culture back to our program. Kelly and his wife, Leisha, reside in Plano and have two sons, one daughter and two granddaughters.
