The Native Seed Gardeners — there are about people in the program — are seed- and plant-focused. Each year they collect, dry and sort seeds from native plants that will later be sown in areas around the state that are being restored. What's more, each fall some seeds are turned over to the Chicago Botanic Garden, which propagates them over the winter and returns the plants to the Native Seed Gardeners the following spring.

They're then given, free, to the gardeners. Thus far about people have taken plants for their home gardens — and are asked to harvest the plants' seeds in autumn to go back into the program.

After that they don't need that much care. You can grow tons of seeds from that. Plants that the Native Seed Gardeners are helping to propagate include butterfly weed Asclepias tuberosa , various asters including Aster oblongifolius , smooth white lettuce Prenanthes alba , turtlehead Chelone glabra and white blue-eyed grass Sisyrinchium albidum.

Seeds and plants are free to gardeners who are willing to care for plants and give back the seed.
