Resident 2y ago. Everyone is very friendly, and the people who walk their dogs are really responsible for what their dogs leave behind by carrying little plastic bags! This area is the nicer part of town but others is like walking in a trash can! So much trash and noone cares enough to pick it up! There isn't a lot of social sites or things to do but the city is definitely growing and expanding into a nice place.
The crime and violence has significantly decreased through out the passing years and the school all seem to do a great job with our education. It's definitely a much cleaner and nicer city than nearby areas like Fresno or Modesto. Is close to downtown areas and highways. Is only 15 mins to community college or UC.
Quick access to freeway and new expressway. Area is considered rural. Shopping and groceries are a few minutes away. Merced is mostly quiet, a nice community to live in. It lacks things to do for entertainment in my opinion, and could use more major stores. Resident 3y ago. Stop lights everywhere. I think it's easy because I can take g st to work and can skip the train traffic. I haven't had a problem with people and their animals.
There is a school nearby. There is a park that children enjoy and great shaded areas". I live in a single family home with my husband and young children and it just feels safe ". Bear creek bike path is a block away, their is an elementary school on our street and a junior high school two blocks away. There is a lab or two or seven within walking distance.
Dogs run loose all the time. I've been attacked by two pit bulls since living here. There are tweakers running around at all hours of the night. There was a murder my front lawn a couple of years ago. The house across the street was harboring a prison escapee. We saw the SWAT team in action for that.
Efforts to clean up the neighborhood aren't working. The police won't even come when called anymore. It is just being overrun by drug dealers, drug users and gangs. I'll being moving soon! Too bad I can't rate it 0 stars and recommend it to No One. This neighborhood is safe, quiet and is walking distance to the charter elementary school at R and W. The majority of the houses are owner occupied leaving just a few rentals.
However, since the economic collapse, there are more homes on the market in this neighborhood and they are selling way under value. I do not know what is the primary cause of this undervalued neighborhood but it is certainly one of the better, more established ones in the city. The walk to downtown is an easy 20 minutes and is pleasant in the late spring until mid fall. The neighborhood also butts along the bear creek bike path which allows you to get to the new University 25 min on bike , College center 10 min on bike or mid-town movie theater 5min on bike with out having to take the car out.
The neighborhood is also located within a 5 minute drive of highway 99 which is the primary road of connecting Merced to LA 5 hrs , SF 2 hrs and Sac 2 hrs. Something missing? Add a place. I have been amazed at the level of both social AND academic growth of my kids since they have entered this program. The nature of the program teaches them to be self-motivated, curious and excited about learning, and most importantly, kind and compassionate.
My kids can progress at their own pace, learn an amazing amount about different cultures, and also learn a deep respect for their peers and the diversity in their community. I cannot recommend the Montessori program more highly. The program is moving to Ada Givens in the Fall of Parent Review 4y ago. Rudolph Rivera Middle School. My daughter went to this school for 7th and 8th grades. She absolutely loved it! The growth I saw in my child academically and emotionally outweighed any concerns I may have had when we first started with this school.
Cooper, Mr. Bromfield, Mr. Hart, and Mr. Church pushed my child to excellence. She went from thinking she was a B student to an "A" student. The principal, Mr. Ferguson is very supportive and hands on with students. Parent Review 10y ago. Merced High School. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Merced High School and graduated in I was able to experience a variety of great teachers and learned skills I wasn't aware some schools don't have as a standard.
They prepare students for jobs with mock interviews, resumes, cover letters and we covered a course on how to get into stocks. There was cooking and a home living elective class as well as many others.
The school was also available to special need students and even though their classes were separate, they encouraged us all to have healthy interactions with eachother. So we'd have rallies and special events together.
Another good benefit to the student is that the school has an open campus policy that gave Juniors and Seniors privileges to leave the campus during lunch as an insentive and if your academics are poor then you'd get the privilege revoked. If you are doing poorly in school, we have great counselors who care about your academics as long as you show an interest in wanting to succeed.
They are also attentive to last year students, so that they are all prepared to graduate or even move on to other career paths. I received all these benefits as a student before the new high school was built and there was about 30 student average per teacher, so I can only imagine how great of an education these students can get going to Merced High School now with the new gym being built and a much more breathable school environment.
