Before , even and odd numbered addresses were not assigned to a specific side of a street. For example: Before , The address of W. After , even numbered addresses were assigned to the north and west sides of streets and odd numbered addresses were assigned to the south and east sides of the streets. Be sure to remember this when your target address is located on a Enumeration District boundary line. A pre - address could be in either ED that shares a boundary line.
After identifying your target ED in the Census, remember that post street addresses may be completely different than the street addresses you find in the Census Enumeration District you have selected. The Census will list the addresses and street names in existence in Directional Coordinates did not exist for the census, but were included on the maps to help you locate addresses on current day Chicago Street maps.

Topographic and other maps from this period are available through the University of Illinois Historical Maps Online project. The digital Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps available by subscription only include building-by-building maps of early 20th-century Chicago.
The Encyclopedia of Chicago Website includes several maps from this period. The companion Website, Social Scientists Map Chicago , contains several maps focusing on the same years. Most maps of Chicago during this period--at the University of Chicago and elsewhere--remain available in paper only.
